Planes, Trains and Automobiles

えWhen people from other countries come to Japan what do they like to do? Of course they want to see Mt Fuji and go to Kyoto and eat Japanese food. But one thing people want to do when they come to Japan is ride on the bullet train!

When I first came to Japan I went from Hiroshima to Kyoto by bullet train. This was very exciting for me. But one thing surprised me. There were many, many tunnels. In Australia there are few tunnels but in Japan tunnels are everywhere, in fact Japan is the land of tunnels and bridges.

Of course in Australia we have many bridges but none as big or long as in Japan. In Imabari we're lucky to have the Shimanami Sea Road and the Kurushima Bridges. About once a year I will ride my bicycle across the Kurushima Bridges. It's always so much fun because the view is wonderful. It's also a little scary.

But my favorite man-made thing in Japan is actually an island. Do you know what island it is? It's Kansai Airport! Whenever I go to Kansai Airport I'm always amazed. I think Kansai Airport is a wonder of the modern world. I love to go there and I always think how clever humans are!

日本にやってくる外国人は何をしたいのだろうか。もちろん、富士山を見たり、京都に行ったり、日本料理を食べたいと思っている。でも彼らが日本でしたいと思っているのは、新幹線に乗ることなのだ！

私が初めて日本に来たとき、広島から京都まで新幹線で行った。この経験は私にとってとても興奮するものだったが、私はあることに驚いた。トンネルの数があまりにも多かったのだ。オーストラリアにはトンネルはほとんどないが、日本ではいたる所にあり、実際、日本はトンネルと橋の国だ。もちろんオーストラリアにも橋はたくさんあるが日本のように大きくて長いものはない。ラッキーなことに、今治にはしまなみ海道と来島海峡大橋がある。私は1年に1度くらい来島海峡大橋を自転車で渡る。景色がとても美しいので、それはとても楽しい。すこし怖くもある。

しかし、私が日本で最も気に入っている人工物は、実は島なのです。何島か知っていますか。関西空港なのです。関西
空港は現代世界の驚異だ。私は関西空港に行くのが大好きで、いつも人間はなんて利口なんだと思う。

七夕に願うものは？

今週は「七夕」。
織姫と彦星の伝説にあやかって、願い事を・・・

そのときって、
「○○になりますように」とか「○○できますように」とかって
いわゆる、　他力本願　なんよね。

勉強は、他力本願ではどうにもならない・・・
「成績が上がりますように」は
きっと叶わない願い事。

Question of the Day- June 8th

Jun, a high school first grader, wants to know how he can improve his English pronunciation.

The key to good pronunciation is not speaking, it's listening! Listening to English a lot will help your pronunciation. Listen to music or watch TV in English with subtitles. Pay attention to difficult sounds such as "l" and "r" or "b" and "v" and also to sounds such as "br" and "bl" or "cr" and "cl". If you can hear the different sounds you will be able to pronounce them.

Another problem Japanese speakers of English have is "katakana pronunciation". Some people will say "I amu furomu Japanu" instead of "I am from Japan". So try to avoid "katakana pronunciation".

Also remember we don't pronounce every letter in English. In the sentence "I want to go shopping" we should pronounce "want to" as "wan to" dropping one "t" sound. This will make your English sound more natural.

高校1年生のジュンはどうすれば英語の発音がうまくなるのか知りたがっている。

発音をうまくするカギは話すことではない。聴くことなんだ。英語をたくさん聴くことが英語を上手に発音する"助けになるんだ。音楽を聴いたり、字幕を見ながら英語でテレビを見なさい。"l"と"r"のような難しい音や、"br"と"bl"、"cr"と"cl"のような音にも神経を集中するんだ。音の違いを聞きとることができれば、その音も発音できるようになる。

日本人が英語を話すときのもう1つの問題が「カタカナ発音」だ。"I am from Japan"と発音せずに"I amu furomu Japanu"と発音する人もいる。だから、カタカナ発音は避けるようにしなさい。

全ての文字を英語で発音するわけではないということも覚えておいたほうがいいね。"I want to go shopping"という文では"t"の音を落として"want to"を"wan to"と発音したほうがいいんだ。こうすれば君の英語の音はもっと自然になる。

Question of the Day- May 25th

Chiaki, a 2nd grade high schooler says she can't use "a" and "the" properly.

Chiaki, many students have this problem, sometimes native English speakers don't know. Not only do we need to know when to use "a" and "the" but we also need to know when not to use "a" and "the"! Wow, it's confusing.
In general "a" is for something non-specific and "the" is for something specific. For example if I say "I want to read the book" I mean one book in particular but if I say "I want to read a book" any book is OK. Is any book OK? Then use "a". If there is one special book you want to read then use "the".
We use "the" with things both the speaker and the listener know, for example we always say "the sun" or "the moon" because everybody knows about them.
We use "a" to show we are a member of a group. For example, "Mr Mitani is a teacher", there are many teachers, Mr Mitani is one of many teachers.
Also you should know when not to use "a" or "the". Don't use "a" or "the" before then names of countries, cities, towns, street names, lakes, mountains, sports, languages or school subjects. But you must use "the" before the names of rivers, oceans and seas. It's very confusing!

高校2年生のチアキさんは言う。「『a』と『the』を正しく使うことができません。」

　チアキ、多くの生徒がこの問題を抱えていて、英語圏の人でも知らないことがあるんだ。どんなときに"a"と"the"を使うのか知る必要があるだけでなく、"a"や"the"を使ってはいけないときも知っておく必要がある。ああ、なんてややこしんだ！
　一般的に"a"は不特定なものに、"the"は特定のものに使う。例えば、"I want to read the book"と言えば、ある特定の本を意味しているけど、"I want to read a book"と言えば、どんな本でもいいということだ。どんな本でもいい？それなら"a"を使いなさい。なにか特別な本を読みたければ、そのときは"the"を使いなさい。
　話し手と聞き手の両方が知っていることに対しては"the"を使うよ。例えば、いつも"the sun"とか"the moon"と言うけれど、これはだれでもそのことを知っているからなんだ。
　あるグループの一員であることを示すときには"a"を使うよ。例えば、"Mr. Mitani is a teacher"と言えば、先生はたくさんいるけれど、三谷先生はたくさんいる先生の中の一人ということなんだ。
　"a"や"the"を使ってはいけないときも知っておくべきだね。国、都市、町、通り、湖、山、スポーツ、言語、学科の前では"a"も"the"もつかない。でも、川とか海（洋）の前にはつけるんだ。なんて、ややこしい！
　"a"や"the"の使い方に関するような質問があれば、直接聞きにきて。新しい生徒に出会えるのはうれしい！
　
　
　　　

　　

Question of the Day- May 11th

Ichiro, a 2nd grade high school boys asks a question many students want to know the answer to; "How do I make learning English more interesting?"

This is a very important question. Before I answer I want to ask one question. Why are you studying English? Your answer is probably "I have to study English, English is a school subject!" You may think there is no reason to study English so English is not interesting to you. But there are many reasons to study English.
Maybe the most important reason is for your job. If you are good at English it will be easier to get a good job and a high salary. Many companies require English these days.
Of course, many people all over the world speak English and many foreign people come to Japan. If you meet some visitors to Japan and you can't communicate with them but your friend, who studied English hard, can communicate, maybe you will be ashamed. In Japan people who are good at English are very admired.
When you study English now, think how useful English will be in the future for you!

　高校2年生のイチロー君は多くの生徒たちが知りたがっている質問をしている。「どうすれば英語の勉強がもっと楽しくなりますか。」

　これは重要な質問だ。答える前にひとつ聞きたい。なぜ英語を勉強しているのか。君はおそらくこう答えるだろう。「英語を勉強しなければいけないから。英語が学校の教科だから。」君は英語を勉強するのに理由なんかないと思っているかもしれない。だから君にとってたのしくないんだ。でも、英語を学ぶのにはたくさんの理由があるんだ。
　最も重要な理由は仕事のためだろう。英語が得意なら仕事に就きやすくなり、給料もよい。最近では、多くの会社が英語を必要としている。外国人旅行客と会っても君はコミュニケーションをとることができず、英語を一生懸命勉強した友人ができれば、君は恥ずかしくなるだろう。日本では英語のできる人はとても羨望の目で見られる。
　今英語を勉強していれば、君の将来にとってどれほど役にたつか考えてごらん。

Question of the Day- April 27th

Aika, a 1st grade junior high scooler asks this question. "What kinds of Japanese things and technologies are used in your lives in Australia?"

Aika thank you for question. The first thing you will notice is that about 50% of cars in Australia are Japanese. In the house you will see that most people have Japanese televisions, refrigerators or vacuum cleaners.
Another thing we use in Australia that is from Japan is rice. 80% of Australia's rice is the same variety of rice that is grown in Japan. In fact the first person to grow rice in Australia was a Japanese man named Isaburo Takasuka who was born in Matsuyama! This is his picture.

中学1年生のアイカさんは次のような質問をしている。「日本のものや科学技術で、オーストラリアの日常生活で使われているものは何かありますか。」

アイカ、質問をありがとう。まず最初に気づくのは、オーストラリアで走っている車の約50パーセントは日本製だ。家では、ほとんどの人が日本製のテレビ、冷蔵庫、掃除機を使っている。
他に日本のものでオーストラリアで使っているものには米があるね。オーストラリア米の80パーセントは日本で栽培されているのと同じ種類のものなんだよ。それどころか、オーストラリアで最初に米を栽培した日本人は、タカツカ　イサブロウという日本人男性で、彼は松山の生まれなんだ。ここに彼の写真がある。

Ayumi asks, "How can I be proficient in English?"

I'm sorry Ayumi but there is no easy way. You get to be proficient in English the same way you get to be proficient in anything, by practising and not giving up. Try to surround yourself with English. Listen to music from England or America. If you use the internet try to sometimes use English. For example use Google in English or use You Tube in English. When you can, use English in your daily life, sometimes watch American TV programs or movies without subtitles. And remember, Rome wasn't built in a day! (ローマは一日にして成らず).

アユミ、残念ながら簡単な方法はない。英語が上達するには、他のことでも同じだけど練習してあきらめないことだ。自分を英語漬にするんだ。イギリスやアメリカの音楽を聴くんだ。インターネットをするなら、ときどき英語を使ってみることだね。例えば、グーグルやYou Tubeを英語で利用するんだ。できれば、日常生活でも英語を使うようにして、ときにはアメリカのテレビ番組や映画を字幕なしで見なさい。それから、覚えておいてほしい。『ローマは一日にしてならず』だ。

Question of the Day- March 24th

Marina a 3rd grader from Hiyoshi Junior High School ask this very important question, "What are the differences between American English and British English?"

Thank you for your question Marina. First of all, the differences between American English and British English are few, 99% of the time they are the same. The main differences are in spelling and word use. For example, in British English we write "centre" but in American English we write "center". In British English we use the word "lorry" but in American English we use the word "truck". In Japan you will mostly learn American English. But don't worry, people from Britian, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or even India will understand you perfectly if you use American English.

日吉中学3年生のマリナさんは次のようなとても重要な質問をしている。「アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の違いはなんですか」

マリナさん質問ありがとう。まず第一に、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の間にはほとんど違いはなく、99パーセントの確率で同じなんだ。主な違いはつづりと単語の使い方だね。例えば、イギリス英語の"centre"はアメリカ英語では"center"、"lorry"は"truck"になるんだ。日本では主にアメリカ英語を学んでいるね。でもご心配なく。イギリス、オーストラリア、カナダ、ニュージーランド、それにインドの人たちでさえ、君がアメリカ英語でしゃべっても完全にに理解してくれるよ。

Toshihito , a junior high school 3rd grader asks a very interesting question. He asks "What does the "o" in "Jack-o-lantern" stand for"?

Great question Toshihito. The "o" stands for "of" so "Jack-o-lantern" means "Jack of the lantern". In this case "Jack" means "man" so we get "man of the lantern" or as we usually say in English "night watchman" (夜間警備員).
The idea of the "Jack-o-lantern" is connected to the Japanese idea of "onibi" (鬼火).

立花中学3年生の俊仁君はとてもおもしろい質問をする。「Jack-o-lanternのoはどういう意味ですか」

いい質問だね俊仁君。この"o"は"of"の意味なんだ。だから"Jack-o-lantern"は"Jack of the lantern"ということなんだね。この場合だと"Jack"は"man"の意味だから、"man of the lantern"つまり英語でよく言うところの"night watchman"（夜間警備員）という意味になるんだ。

"Jack -o-lantern" の考えは日本の鬼火という考えとつながっている。

When The Earth Shakes

In Australia it's very rare to have an earthquake. We have no volcanoes and hot springs are very few. When Australian people come to Japan one thing they sometimes worry about are earthquakes. I remember the first time I felt an earthquake in Japan I was a little scared but the Japanese people said "Don't worry! That was a small one". There have been many small ones since then but in March 2001 the Geiyo Earthquake hit this area. I have never been so scared in my life. Earthquakes are very, very terrible things. Sometimes people from other countries say "I want to feel what an earthquake is like" but I tell them "No, you don't want to feel a big earthquake because it's too scary"!
On March 11 we all saw what a terrible thing an earthquake is. Like everyone I was so shocked to see what happened in the Tohoku area. When I saw the tsunami hit I felt sick because I knew many, many people will die. I am so sad when I see and hear what happened to the people in Tohoku. In Ehime we are safe so now we must help the people in Tohoku. Of course we can give money but we can also give things. Many people have no clothes, no car, no house! They have nothing. But we can help them. It is our duty. Each of us is only one person but we do what we can. Maybe one day it will be us who need help but now people in Tohoku need our help. Let's do all we can to help them.

どうしても復習をしないことには次の勉強がはかどりません。しかし，「どんどん新しい内容を習っているから復習なんてする時間がない…」というのが現実です(>_<)

と，堅苦しい挨拶はこのへんにしておいて…

「いよいよ高校生!!」と期待に胸はずんでいるとは思いますが，高校の勉強はそんなに甘くありません。
特に，今治西高校，北高校に入学予定の人は，春休みに遊んでばっかりじゃ最初の一歩でこけちゃうぞ!!

というわけで，中学生部から新高１生のみんなに最後のアドバイス!!

通常クラスやSSクラスの中で言っていたように，今治西高校，北高校（普通科）では入学式後にテストがあります。さらに，今治西高校は数学Ⅰの最初の「式の計算」の部分は既習としてテストを受けないといけません!!

PROVERBS (ことわざ）

I like proverbs. By studying proverbs we can understand more about culture. It's interesting that some proverbs in English and Japanese have exactly the same meaning. For example "a rolling stone gathers no moss" (転がる石に苔むざす)
is the same in Japanese and English. Other proverbs such as "even monkeys fall out of trees" (猿も木から落ちる) aren't used in English but the meaning is very easy to understand. Some proverbs are almost the same, like the proverb "under the table" (袖の下) Under the sleeve is almost the same as under the table. Other proverbs are very different when translated from Japanese to English but the proverbial meaning is the same. One example is "different strokes for different folks" (十人十色). Other proverbs have very different meanings. The proverb "to spread your wings" in English has a different meaning than the Japanese proverb "羽根を伸ばす". But some Japanese proverbs are very difficult to understand. How about "馬の骨" or "horse bones". I have no idea what this means. Do you know?

Moshi Moshi

My cell-phone is very old. I bought it almost four and a half years ago. I bought this telephone because I could use it when I went overseas. But nowadays almost any cell-phone can be used overseas. Also I have a few problems with my cell-phone. The main problem is that I can't turn it off. To end a call I must close my cell-phone. In the airplane you must turn off your cell-phone but I can't so when I go on the airplane I hide my cell-phone so the cabin attendants can't see it!
So now it's time to buy a new cell-phone. Recently many people have smart-phones. They are really great and very useful. Mr Fujioka, a teacher at this juku, showed me his i-phone. Wow, it's so cool I thought. But I am using Docomo and the i-phone is from Softbank. What should I do? Also a smart phone is very expensive to use. Right now I only pay about 2500 yen per month for my cell-phone but with a smart phone the cost will be 5000 or 6000 yen. I really want a smart phone but it's too expensive. Oh no! What cell-phone do you use? Do you too want a smart phone? Please give me your recommendation.
